Boca Na Tchon” takes the sunny disposition of funana, blends it with some hard trap rolls and chopped and screwed vocals, then bridges it all by means of a raw drum palette. It was made by Motafied Beatz, a Cape Verdean producer raised in Rotterdam. He draws on those diverse roots for his inspiration, mixing Dutch Latin house with the sounds of Funana, Zouk, Coladeria, and Kuduro. Mota – otherwise known as Key-J – also adds hip hop and R&B to the mix. You can hear these myriad interests in the recent mixtape he dropped, Flashback, which “Boca” was included on. It’s a collection of tracks from 2008-10, all officially released for the first time with this mix. On a confusing note, the name Motafied Beatz can refer to Key-J or to his collective, which includes two emcees and a deejay.
