Mixpak FM: DJ Theory

fm11_017-2

The first in our Carnival special for Mixpak FM, Mixpak 017 is brought to you by San Francisco’s DJ Theory. Aside from contributing to NYC’s excellent Large Up blog, Theory is also a stellar producer, creating a whole host of originals and remixes, from the Moombahsoul tracks included on David Heartbreak’s compilation, to ‘Quick Money feat. Jahdan Blakkamoore’, that beautifully keeps intact the sentiments of its sample: Amadou & Mariam’s ‘Sabali’. Of course, Theory is also a banging DJ, and here he dips through dancehall, moombahton, funky, ending up on a high energy soca tip.

You can subscribe to Mixpak FM via iTunes, subscribe with an RSS reader from the Mixpak FM site or download this mix directly.

Vybz Kartel’s “Go Go Wine” video continues to make an impact. In the US, you can catch it in rotation on MTV Jams, VH1 Soul or demand it on Music Choice. In the UK, it’s been showing on MTV, Channel AKA, and on Virgin On Demand. Drop us a note on twitter or facebook and let us know if you’ve seen it on TV.

It’s been a big week for Nigerian music: what with the current king of productions Don Jazzy made it onto the production credits for Watch the Throne. This was to be expected Kanye had signed him and the biggest artist to Good Music a month or so early (check out Pusha T’s non plussed reaction). Don Jazzy deserves it, he remains one of the few Nigerian producers that actually take the time figure out how to create many a national hit and not just focus on making a regional one.

His antithesis is the vibrant Terry G, a man who has the support of the streets. Not in a trap or die way, he just happens to make incredible fast paced, frenetic and engergetic Nigerian pop. Whilst preparing for his second single he released this single which sees him “freestyle” over the immortal Bam Bam riddim.

The brand new single from Gnucci Banana, ‘Famalam Jam’, was released last month and now has its very own video! This Nola bounce inspired track was produced by none other than Mixpak fam, Schlachthofbronx, and is unsuprisingly full of fun and summer vibes.
