Sonora – La Isla Bonita

Now that Drake made OG Ron C’s names even more famous by incorporating his chopped and screwed version of Marvin Room in the actual video for the song, Chopped and Screwed is back. Sonora has been making wonderful blissed out zouk, reggaeton, moombahton business for a while. The Texan decided to try his hand at re-crafting this Madonna classic. The result is something that is more than a sizzurp drenched cover, the song has been allowed to linger in spaces that were not there before. The lack of words is highlighted by the drums, which add some toughness to such a light track.

Melé at Boiler Room

Melé steps up to the Boiler Room today for the Standard Place takeover, alongside Oneman, Artwork (the man behind Big Apple Records), Rust & Reecha. It’s a live internet stream direct from London, so lock on from 8pm GMT (3pm EDT) at www.boilerroom.tv.

As the nights get longer and the memory of summer fades away we often think of missed opportunities to frolic in the sunshine. For me this soca hit from Rudy and King of Soca, Machel Montano, was a missed opportunity. Not only does it featuring a pulsating frenetic drum line and a hypnotic call and response breakdown, but also a Rick Ross drop. This will not be the last song to sample Rick Ross but few will ever manage to retain the humour that is Rozay’s adlibs.

Buddy – Awesome

Taken from the mixtape to Jeantourage (How to Make It In America), this Neptunes-produced track has tinges of Hell Hath No Fury. The dark and thumping beat is something that we haven’t heard from Pharrell and Invisible C since the Slim Thug (2004) days. I’m not sure if this will lead to them getting back in the studio and creating more dark encompassing sonic landscapes but this is a start.

As for the rapping it’s ok, Californian Buddy is a decent rapper. I’m hoping that this picks up steam and you can get someone like Waka Flocka on the remix. Sometimes a little bit of Brick Squad is all that’s missing.
