Most people thought that when juke blew up, the tracks that would bring the style into the ears of everyone outside of Chicago would be the club ready joints that frequently sample vocals from recent well-know cuts. Instead, the battle-oriented footwork tracks were the ones that attracted the spotlight. But that big, party driven sound can still get it jukin. Just take a listen to this exclusive cut from The Shy’s DJ Roc, “Flex Juke Mix”. It takes the already dance infecting lyrics from Party Boyz “Flex,” and brings them to the next level. (“Flex” is a dance itself, but not the NYC-born style Flexin.) Roc is part of the BOTC Crew, a group of DJs from the Southside that includes members DJ Phaze, DJ P-Nut, DJ Yung Tel Em, and a number of affiliates. Whether you consider success to be how many people have listened to your music, or whether you successfully pushed a sound into new directions, Johnny Vicious can claim both. Sure he worked with the likes of Madonna and Whitney Houston, but he also produced some of the grimiest NY house ever. This oft forgotten track from 1993 could still probably turn out a party, with its omnipotent vibe that threatens worship or destruction. OK OK, that might be interpreting the vocal clips more harshly than intended. It’s more likely a positive track asking for support in a dark but fun world. It goes through a long string of sections, break downs, and switch ups, even dropping the Mardi Gras break popularized by Run DMC. The tune was the A side for the second single on his label Vicious Muzik Records, and a version of it can still be picked up at most digital retailers.
