Vice and Mixpak just released a new cut from Vybz Kartel in advance of a forthcoming video for the track “My Crew”. Taken from the deluxe edition of the album Kingston Story the two labels are teaming on (dropping on August 14th), the track is up for free download below.
Dre Skull shared some vivid memories of the track’s genesis with Vice:
When I brought this track to Kartel, he asked me what I was picturing and I roughed up a deep voice and sang ‘My Crew’ and told him to do something that he could bump in the club as a sort of anthem for his crew. Keep in mind at that time he had his own club in Kingston, The Building, that had walls covered in larger than life sized pictures of Kartel and that served his Street Vybz brand rum (which featured his picture on the bottle). When he was in the VIP section in The Building with his crew it was an understatement to say he was running things. I wanted this song to capture that vibe. Hearing that concept he took my quick notes and knocked this out in about an hour.
Snoop Dogg’s upcoming album as Snoop Lion, Reincarnated, was announced by VICE this week, who will be releasing the record (and a documentary) in the fall. Our own Dre Skull co-produced the album alongside Diplo & Ariel Rechtshaid.
