Dre Skull in Kingston

Dre Skull wrote a report for Vice about his recent trip to Kingston:

I gave Beenie Man two riddims to choose from and we loaded them up for him to listen. One was the track Popcaan recorded for “Get Gyal Easy” and the other was the minimal 99 bpm track that both Popcaan and Suku had recorded on. Unexpectedly, Beenie told me he didn’t want to choose and that I should make the decision. He had not yet listened to either one and he left the room for a bit. While he was gone both riddims were played loudly for everyone in the control room, and everyone weighed in. People liked both of the tracks, but after some back and forth the minimal 99bpm riddim won out as the one he should voice. Beenie came back in and, hearing the track, started getting more animated. I had kind of wanted him on this one, ’cause it has a bit of a throwback feel, and I thought it might bring out some classic Beenie Man. It did.

Tommy Lee – Psycho

Tommy Lee keeps it gutter on “Psycho,” and this new video that dropped last week just reinforces the menacing vibe. Possessed by auto tune demons, he scrapes high threats and drops low for sullen denouncements. The Gaza affiliate’s lyrics are as dark as the imagery, beats, and vocal effects. He airs out murder threats in front of crowds, priests, and schools and calls for demons to take his victim’s soul. (Although the young deejay doesn’t single anybody out in particular, Blak Ryno responded to it with a dis track called “Geico“.) The video was directed by Omar Celebrity Aldana for Heavy Films. The tune was produced by Anju Blaxxx and released on his label UIM Records. Check Tommy’s most recent mixtape Gaza Man Crazy, but watch for a new one this summer.

Last year saw many a talented young vocalist coming up through the ranks, Jessie Ware to Sampha, and of course Javeon McCarthy, who you may recognize from his appearance on L-Vis 1990’s ‘Lost In Love’. Now his latest solo single, ‘Precious’, has been handed to Brenmar for the remix, letting him do what he does best, giving the silky vocal a synthed-up club-ready rework…

Javeon McCarthy – Precious (Brenmar Remix) new!! for DL! by BRENMAR

Famous Eno’s first solo EP, All Good FM, is out now! Get it on iTunes / Juno / Beatport.

London has many a legendary FM radio station, from Kool to Kiss, Rude to BBC. This summer, Famous Eno adds yet another to the mix: All Good FM. With this release, the London DJ/producer (formerly half of rhythm gangsters Warrior One) explores all the best qualities of pirate radio: surprise, variety and the unadulterated sound of the underground.

Eno’s title track is full of straight-up UK flavors — it’s a seamless blend of ’90s house chords, UK funky sounds, and pirate radio hat-tips capped off with MC Stitch’s infectious vocals. Ripe for summer anthem season! Sticking to the same vibe, Eno enlists Ireland’s Arveene & Misk on the remix; the duo flips the track into a funky-tinged electro heavy-hitter that circles around samples that make it bounce, skate & roll. Turning the dial to Newark, Brick Bandits’ DJ Sliink gives this tune the Jersey treatment, chopping samples like a kung-fu master and kicking drum patterns guaranteed to hype the dance. Completing the release is Eno’s own remix, which takes the original beyond recognition in a flurry of hyperactive percussion, military snares and dancehall calls.

For all the lively massive and the phoneline crew, there’s only one station to be locked onto this summer: All Good FM.
